Transforming Cleaning Standards
Prior to our engagement, Belmont Primary School was serviced by a team of eight cleaners delivering a combined total of 72 hours per week. Despite this resource allocation, cleaning standards consistently fell below expectations, resulting in regular complaints from staff and parents. Key issues included:
- Heavily soiled corridors and staircases
- Dirty walls and handrails
- Excessive limescale buildup on classroom sinks
- Poorly maintained and unsanitary toilet facilities
- Disorganised cleaning cupboards, lacking clear colour coding or proper product labelling
Approach:
After securing the contract through a competitive tender process, we conducted a thorough on-site assessment to evaluate current practices and identify inefficiencies.
Key Improvements Implemented:
- Labour Efficiency:
We restructured the cleaning rota to eliminate over 10 unnecessary labour hours per week. This was achieved by enhancing task allocation and introducing individual accountability, ensuring that every hour contributed directly to visible, measurable cleaning outcomes.
- Revised Cleaning Hours:
We modified the cleaning schedule to start only after students and teaching staff had vacated the premises. This eliminated disruptions, improved access to all areas, and maximised productivity during cleaning shifts.
- Organisational Overhaul:
Cleaning storage areas were completely reorganised. We introduced clearly defined colour-coded cleaning stations, labelled all chemicals and equipment, and implemented full COSHH compliance protocols, significantly improving safety and operational efficiency.
- Scheduled Deep Cleans:
In addition to an initial comprehensive summer deep clean, we introduced a scheduled programme of deep cleans during all half-term breaks and school holidays. This approach ensures effective use of contracted hours during quieter periods, allowing our team to focus on high-impact areas that accumulate dirt over time and are harder to maintain during term-time operations.
Results
The transformation has been both immediate and sustained:
- Corridors, classrooms, and washrooms are consistently clean and well-maintained
- Hygiene improvements have been positively noted by staff and parents
- Cleaning standards have remained high for nearly a year, with no decline in quality
- Scheduled deep cleans during school breaks have allowed for focused attention on high-priority areas, preventing deterioration and maintaining a consistently high standard
