How to Choose Eco-Friendly Cleaning Services: A Verification Checklist for Businesses

Why “eco-friendly” doesn’t mean what you think it means

Search "eco friendly cleaning services" and you’ll find thousands of results - and almost no consensus on what the term legally requires. In the UK, "eco-friendly," "green," and "natural" are not regulated terms. Any provider can print them without independent verification of any kind.

That’s a problem if you’re a facilities manager, office manager, or business owner trying to make a genuine sustainability decision - whether that’s for ESG reporting, a tender requirement, or simply because your staff and visitors care about it. You’re not short on options claiming to be green. You’re short on a reliable way to tell which ones actually are.

Independent research backs this up: in a 2023 review, the European Commission found that 42% of environmental claims examined online were exaggerated, false, or otherwise deceptive. The cleaning industry, where “green” sells, is no exception.

The certifications that actually prove sustainability

Not all certifications carry equal weight, and a few are far more rigorous than others. These are the ones worth asking about when you’re evaluating office cleaning services, a deep clean contractor, or the cleaning products used in your building day to day.

ISO 14001 - Environmental Management

This certifies that a company has a structured, independently audited system for managing its environmental impact - covering everything from waste handling to the products it chooses to stock. It says less about any single bottle of cleaner and more about whether the business behind it is actually run with sustainability in mind, year after year, not just at launch.

B Corp Certification

B Corp assesses the whole business against a public standard covering workers, supply chain, governance, and environmental impact and requires re-verification every three years. A live, checkable B Corp profile is one of the strongest signals available, because it’s nearly impossible to fake.

EcoVadis

EcoVadis benchmarks a supplier’s sustainability performance against thousands of others in the same sector, awarding a percentile score and a medal tier (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum). It’s particularly useful for procurement teams who need to compare suppliers on a like-for-like basis rather than relying on self-reported claims.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR GREEN FACILITIES CLIENTS

Green Facilities holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certification, is a Certified B Corporation, and has achieved an EcoVadis Bronze (Top 35%) Sustainability Rating. Every service and process we use can be checked - not just a logo on a page.

Greenwashing red flags vs. verified signals

Side by side, the difference between a genuine sustainability claim and a greenwashed one usually comes down to one thing: can you check it yourself?

Six common greenwashing patterns, and the verified alternative to look for instead.

A useful habit: whenever a supplier or cleaning company makes an environmental claim, ask one follow-up question - "which certification body verified that, and can I see the certificate number?" Genuinely sustainable suppliers answer this instantly. Greenwashed ones change the subject.

Do eco-friendly products clean as well as traditional ones?

This is the question we hear most often from facilities managers, and it’s a fair one nobody wants to trade a clean office or washroom for a green conscience. The honest answer, based on independently tested products, is that modern eco-friendly cleaning products perform comparably to conventional cleaners on grease, limescale, and bacterial reduction. The real differences show up elsewhere.

How to Choose Eco-Friendly Cleaning Services

Where verified eco-friendly products genuinely differ from conventional cleaning chemicals.

Two points are worth calling out specifically:

COSHH burden: many eco-friendly products carry a lower hazard classification, which can reduce the risk assessments and staff training your business needs under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations.

Cost per clean, not cost per bottle: eco-friendly concentrates often dilute at a higher ratio. A slightly higher shelf price can still work out cheaper per clean once you account for fewer bottles, less packaging waste, and reduced storage space - relevant whether you’re managing a single office or a multi site hotel cleaning or restaurant cleaning contract.

A 6-point checklist before you switch or sign a contract

Whether you’re switching your own supplies or assessing a cleaning company’s tender response, run through this list before signing anything.

Eco-friendly cleaning verification checklist

  • Ask for the certificate number- not just the logo - for any ISO, B Corp, or EcoVadis claim, and check it on the certifying body’s own register.
  • Request a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for any product used in your building. A supplier that hesitates to provide one is a warning sign.
  • Check the re-audit date. B Corp and EcoVadis both require periodic re-verification - a badge from five years ago with no renewal isn’t current proof.
  • Ask how products are chosen, not just what’s used today. A genuinely sustainable cleaning partner can explain their procurement criteria.
  • Confirm COSHH documentation is in place and matches the products actually being used on site, especially for deep cleaning and washroom sanitisation work.
  • Get it in writing. If sustainability matters for your own ESG or tender reporting, your cleaning contract should reference the specific certifications, not just "eco-friendly practices."

What to look for by business type

The right eco-friendly cleaning approach varies depending on what your building actually does. A few sector-specific considerations:

Offices

Indoor air quality is the biggest win. Switching to verified low-VOC, eco-friendly products for daily office cleaning can measurably reduce the headaches, fatigue, and respiratory irritation linked to conventional chemical cleaners, particularly in open-plan spaces with limited ventilation.

Hotels and hospitality

Guests increasingly expect it, and it’s becoming a genuine differentiator. Hotel cleaning teams should prioritise certified washroom and laundry products with strong biodegradability credentials, given the volume of water and product used.

Food businesses and kitchens

This is where verification matters most. Eco-friendly claims in food contact environments need to be backed by both an environmental certification and food-safety compliant formulation ask specifically for both, not one or the other.

Schools and educational settings

Lower toxicity products reduce risk for children and staff with allergies or asthma. Combine this with a documented educational cleaning programme that’s transparent about exactly what’s used and why.

Retail and leisure

High footfall means high product turnover concentrated, certified eco-friendly products reduce both packaging waste and the storage space needed on site, relevant for retail cleaning and health club and leisure cleaning alike.
